Frequently asked questions

Why organic cotton?

Purchasing organic cotton clothing and textiles benefits many layers from the farmers growing the cotton, the retailers manufacturing the fabric, textiles and then finally, you the consumer, wearing the organic cotton garments.  Farmers working with non-GMO, organic cotton do not work with the toxic chemicals, pesticides, and synthetic fertilizers that can be harmful to their lives as well as their family’s lives.  In organic cotton farms, more women tend to be employed due to the lack of toxic chemicals in turn providing economic stability for more women world-wide.

Retailers and manufacturers working with organic cotton are supporting the future of our eco-system, supporting soil health, reducing the pesticides running into rivers and waterways, ultimately our drinking water and protecting Mother Earth.  Retailers are playing a substantial role in contributing to a socially and ecologically more sustainable production cycle.  Fair wages and fair trade practices provide higher quality working conditions.

You, the consumer, benefit greatly from having organic cotton clothing and accessories in that your skin is not absorbing the toxic chemicals lurching within conventional, GMO cotton or other fiber clothing.  Organic cotton clothing and accessories can reduce exposure to these toxic pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. *portions taken from www.organiccotton.org

d&k organics sources certified organic cotton fabric (GOTS is preferred) and thread in all clothing and accessories produced.  We also source recycled and environmentally friendly products for shipping, packaging, and office supplies.  We are made in the USA and partner with USA made resources whenever possible.  Our goal is to support women and USA based businesses.

What is GOTS Certified?

Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)

The aim of the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is to define requirements to ensure organic status of textiles, from harvesting of the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing up to labeling in order to provide a credible assurance to the end consumer.

GOTS is recognized as the world's leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibers. It defines high-level environmental criteria along the entire organic textiles supply chain and requires compliance with social criteria as well.

Only textile products that contain a minimum of 70% organic fibers can become GOTS certified. All chemical inputs such as dyestuffs and auxiliaries used must meet certain environmental and toxicological criteria.  Finished or processed textile products sold in the U.S. that imply or leave the consumer to believe that the final product is certified organic must meet either the USDA organic regulations or GOTS.

The International Working Group on a Global Organic Textile Standard is made up of the Organic Trade Association (OTA), The Soil Association (UK), International Association Natural Textile Industry (IVN)(Germany), and the Japan Organic Cotton Association. *Taken from www.ota.com

Why don't we use flame retardant chemicals in our fabrics and threads?

We strive to offer all organic fabrics without the use of chemicals in our products.  Over the years, research has shown long term exposure to flame retardant chemicals, having increased risk factors for many diseases and cognitive abilities and is shown to have carcinogenic risk factors.  For you convenience, we have listed links to articles detailing the risks in exposure to flame retardants.  We will update these articles and additional information as it becomes available.

What you need to know about sleepwear without the use of flame retardants:

In addition to being 100% organic cotton, our sleepwear does not contain the chemical flame retardants found in most sleepwear of today.  This means, our sleepwear must be worn within the tight fitting regulations set forth by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).  Our sizing recommendations are based on these guidelines and our sleepwear has been constructed to match the CPSC’s measurement guidelines for tight fitting sleepwear.
